Helium: Safety First

Helium is nontoxic and safe to use provided its properties are understood, and it is stored and handled properly.

Keep in mind that:

• Helium is colourless, odorless and tasteless at normal temperature and pressure
• Helium can act as a simple asphyxiant by displacing and liquefying air
• Exposure to liquid helium may cause severe frostbite to skin and eyes

Handling and Storage

• Store in an adequately ventilated room
• Cylinders should be protected against damage
• Proper safety equipment and apparel should be used
